Sheriff: Pawn shop sold guns to felons

LOVEJOY, Ga.,None — Clayton County Sheriff's deputies arrested three men Wednesday night on charges of selling firearms to convicted felons.

The men worked at the Diamond Pawn & Gun shop on Tara Boulevard in Lovejoy.

Investigators got a search warrant for the business after arresting a convicted felon who claimed he bought guns there.

Sheriff Kem Kimbrough told Channel 2's Amy Napier Viteri that Robert Stevenson got six guns at Diamond Pawn on Tuesday, hours before deputies arrested him for selling marijuana out of his Clayton County home.

Deputies found around 400 guns inside the business, along with prescription pills, crystal methamphetamine and $35,000 in cash.

"Assault rifles, handguns, some exotic, some run of the mill", Kembrough said. "This pawn shop, which is not licensed to sell guns, knowingly transferred firearms to this convicted felon knowing that he was going to sell them."

One of the suspects, Michael Calvert, denied the charges.

"Wasn't nobody selling firearms without a license," Calvert said.

Deputies also arrested Colby Lewis and a third employee.

Kimbrough said the business was likely a supplier for some of the county's gangs and criminals.

The ATF assisted in the raid and the men could face federal charges as well.

"This is basically an underground market for firearms", Kimbrough added.
