CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — A raging fire destroyed a barn full of horses off Cox Road in Cherokee County.

The massive fire killed more than a dozen horses at New Vintage Farm in Woodstock on Thursday morning. Channel 2's Erica Byfield found out almost the same number of horses survived.

"This is just a tragedy," said Karen McGoldrick.

McGoldrick rushed to the site as soon as she heard about the blaze. She's offering her empty stalls at Prospect Hill Farm.

"Barn fires really are our worst nightmare in the business," McGoldrick said. "Barns are tinder boxes because we use wood shavings, we feed horses hay. Those are all super flammable material so they tend to go very fast."

Cherokee County investigators say the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

"My heart breaks for the losses of life as anyone would feel if they've lost their dog, if their dogs had been killed in a house fire. We love our horses just as people love their dogs and cats," McGoldrick said.

Firefighters expect to find hot spots all week because the barn was so big.
