Witnesses said tractor-trailer ran red light, killing 2 in wreck

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia State Patrol has identified two people killed in a Wednesday morning wreck, along with the truck driver involved in the crash that shut down parts of a busy Douglasville road.

The wreck happened at about 11:30 a.m. on Interstate 20 near Thornton and Blairs Bridge roads in Douglasville.

Authorities said several others were also injured in the wreck that occurred after a tractor-trailer ran a red light and collided into a car.

State patrol officials said the tractor-trailer - driven by 64-year-old Robert John Sansom, of Colorado - T-boned a Nissan Sentra.

As News Chopper 2 flew overhead, the car could be seen stuck underneath the cab of the trailer.

The Nissan driver Michelle Kamika Chinnis, 35, of Smyrna died after being extricated from the car. Her passenger, 44-year-old Tracy P. Downer, of Atlanta, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said based on witness statements, the tractor-trailer had run a red light just before running into the Nissan.

A total of six vehicles were involved in the wreck. Ten others were treated from the wreck.

Sansom, the tractor-trailer driver, was not injured in the crash. Any charges from the crash will be pending the completion of the investigation, officials said.

Affected lanes have since been reopened.
