ATLANTA,None — A mother says confusion at an Atlanta elementary school left her 6-year-old child wandering down a busy street.
Antionelle Bailey told Channel 2 Action News her son, Davion, walked nearly a mile along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive after leaving Margaret Fain Elementary school in northwest Atlanta.
Bailey said Davion was supposed to board a bus to Jamboree Early Learning Center but school staff would not release her child and instead kept him in an afterschool program. Davion was in the school library when he realized he was alone.
"Teacher was gone, all (the) teachers went home. Everybody was gone," Bailey said.
Davion decided to head home, walking along the busy road and even crossing a major intersection. The 6-year-old reached his house, realized no one was home and continued walking until he was picked up by a bus driver from Jamboree Early Learning Center who contacted Bailey.
"He could have got hit by a car. He could have been snatched. He could have been an Amber Alert," Bailey said.
Bailey said the teacher didn't even know Davion had left the school. A school official told Channel 2 Action News the teacher involved received a letter of reprimand and was warned never to let it happen again, but that's not satisfying Bailey.
"To me, I just feel like that teacher should be out of that school. I don't think that she should be able to work with children," Bailey said.
