Rocks thrown at cars in Clayton County

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga.,None — People in a metro Atlanta apartment community say vandals have been targeting cars by throwing rocks through windows.

One driver reported someone throwing rock at her car as she drove on Upper Riverdale Road in Jonesboro.

Another driver told Channel 2’s Amy Napier Viteri that he believes he talked with the people responsible for breaking his window minutes before it happened.

Mike Thompson showed Napier Viteri the rock he believed vandals threw into his passenger-side window.  The glass was still scattered on the parking lot at the Ashwood Ridge Apartment Complex.

“It looked like they made two attempts to try to bust it out.  They put a dent in the door, and they finally hit the window on the second try,” said Thompson.

The first rock is still in his truck bed.  Thompson said he was visiting a friend at the apartments Monday night when a group of young men approached him.

“They insisted on trying to sell me drugs.  I don’t buy drugs because I don’t do drugs,” said Thompson.

Thompson said minutes later, his trucks’ window was shattered.

“It’s happened a lot around here.  It’s been happening a lot the past couple weeks.  It’s the same description, the same people doing it,” said Thompson.

A report from the Clayton County Police Department said a woman driving past the complex reported someone threw a rock at her car and knocked out her headlight.  According to the report, there have been several incidents like it.

“He had braids, dreadlocks or whatever.  There were three other guys,” said Thompson.

Thompson’s description matches the one the female driver gave police.  He said neighbors told him the group doesn’t live there, but they come into the community through a gap in the fence.

“It’s dangerous.  It’s a bunch of young punks.  You don’t know what to look for,” said Thompson.
