COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A member of the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office community engagement team is facing a criminal charge following a road rage incident in Kennesaw.
Channel 2 Action News obtained dash camera and cellphone video showing part of the confrontation and spoke exclusively with the other driver involved.
According to a Kennesaw Police Department report, officers arrested Darrell Wright and charged him with aggressive driving following the May 15 incident.
Christopher Gasquez, 31, of Roswell, said the encounter began last month as he was driving home after picking up a pizza.
“He’s right up on my bumper and almost hit me several times,” Gasquez told Channel 2 Action News.
Gasquez said he eventually moved into another lane to allow the driver behind him to pass.
However, he said the situation escalated when the other driver began yelling, making obscene gestures and cutting across multiple lanes of traffic.
“At one point, he ends up going across three lanes of traffic to cut me off,” Gasquez said.
Dash camera and cellphone video reviewed by Channel 2 Action News appear to show the driver making obscene gestures and displaying what Gasquez believed was a badge.
“My first thought was federal officer,” Gasquez said. “I hear about all these unmarked federal officers. I figured he was trying to flex his authority on me.”
Gasquez said he continued driving until both men ended up at a gas station on Cobb Parkway, where police were called.
According to the police report, Wright asked to speak with the Kennesaw police chief during the investigation.
Wright works on the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office community engagement team. The office regularly participates in outreach events throughout the community, including programs involving local students.
In a statement, the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office said:
“We are aware of the traffic-related charge involving an employee. The employee promptly disclosed the matter, and the case remains pending before the court. We respect the judicial process and will not prejudge the outcome of a matter that has not yet been adjudicated. Since this is a personnel matter, we will have no further comment on this, however…
We believe accountability and rehabilitation can coexist. Our office believes in both accountability and second chances. We encourage people to make positive contributions to their communities after paying their debt to society. That principle applies broadly and consistently.”
Gasquez said he was surprised to learn the man arrested works for the District Attorney’s Office.
“That’s crazy. This guy’s supposed to be making good connections with the community,” he said.
Court records show Wright’s case is pending in Kennesaw Municipal Court.
