Registered sex offender arrested wandering around elementary school
 

PICKENS COUNTY, Ga. — Authorities are investigating after a registered sex offender was found inside a metro Atlanta elementary school.

According to the Pickens County School District, the man walked into Tate Elementary School just after 9 a.m.

After being inside for about five minutes, he was confronted by school officials. When they ran his ID, they realized he was on the sex offender registry.

The district said the man had “no direct interactions with students.”

The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office issued a warrant for the man’s arrest and the case is ongoing.

Pickens County Sheriff's Office Capt. Kris Stancil told Channel 2 Action News that the man is being held on charges of violating sex offender requirements.

The school released the following statement:

“We want to assure all parents and our community that we take these situations seriously. We must all work together as a community of students, parents and school personnel to keep our campuses safe. Our number one goal is to provide a safe and secure environment for all students and staff, and we will continue to remain vigilant in our efforts.”
