Rangers rescue deer trapped in cemetery fence

HALL COUNTY, Ga. — A Department of Natural Resources biologist rescued two deer hanging from a fence at a Hall County cemetery.

A photo shows the young deer stuck in a wrought-iron fence inside the cemetery. The deer almost made it through the fence, but their back legs wouldn’t fit through the opening.

Christie Melendrez was visiting a grave around 1 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Park Cemetery when she saw the deer and immediately called the DNR.

“I was standing at (the) grave and heard a cry. I looked over that way and there they were. It broke my heart hearing them cry out,” she said.

Biologist Scott Frazier came out quickly and was able to free the deer from the fence.

"They were in remarkably good shape," Frazier said. "They just misjudged those iron fences a lot."

Frazier says the fawns were likely siblings born this spring. He believes they may have gotten trapped early Wednesday morning while they were out with their mom, leaving them stuck in the fence for around five hours.

Video shows Frazier lifting the deer up and maneuvering them out of the fence backwards. Both deer ran back into the woods.

Melendrez says she thanks God she saw them and was able to call someone to rescue them.

“I’m just glad it was a happy ending. It was amazing watching them run off after being released,” she said.
