GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — State investigators have arrested a man they say sold bogus insurance policies to hundreds of small trucking and construction companies.
"There may be 750 up to 1,000 individuals that think they have insurance that really don't," state Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens told Channel 2's Kerry Kavanaugh.
Hudgens says there could be even more.
State investigators charged John Kill, 63, of Peachtree Corners for allegedly selling bogus insurance policies to unsuspecting trucking and construction companies.
Only Channel 2 Action News was there last week as agents raided Kill's home where they say he operated the Appeal Insurance Agency. Hudgens says they identified victims from several boxes of files.
They now believe the operation goes far beyond metro Atlanta they found customers in 10 states -- many across the southeast and as far north as Vermont.
"There were bogus policies being issued and he was trying to act as if he were the insurance company," Hudgens said.
Hudgens says customers alerted his office after contacting actual insurance company based in London, England. But the British company had no record of them.
He says Kill was collecting premiums and pocketing them.
"The amount of money we seized in the bank accounts had hundreds of thousands of dollars in it."
Agents arrested Kill Thursday morning at his home. Channel 2's Kerry Kavanaugh knocked on the door moments later. People inside did not respond.
Hudgens urges anyone who has obtained a policy from this individual to call their insurance company to confirm coverage actually exists. If there is a problem contact the Insurance Department's Consumer Services Division at 1-800-656-2298.
