Atlanta police find body in trash can

ATLANTA — Police are trying to figure out how a woman ended up dead in a trash can near a northeast Atlanta dog park.

Police say the woman was found by someone walking their dog Monday evening in a grassy area.

Her friends were very emotional as they talked to Channel 2's Liz Artz about her. They told Artz that the victim was an alcoholic and they fear that lifestyle finally caught up with her.

Authorities identified the victim as 41-year-old Tyna Bass. They say she was wrapped in a rug and stuffed in the can.

"She was part of the neighborhood.  Everybody is going to miss her really going to miss her," said friend Daryl Wright.

Wright described Bass as a great person who couldn't beat alcoholism.

Wright said Bass rode around the neighborhood on a bike for more than 20 years. He told Artz that everyone knew her he said and everyone loved her.

"I'm going to miss her. Everybody going to miss her," Wright said.

Police have not released a motive or cause of death.

Wright said he last saw Bass Sunday night. Another friend told Artz that Bass brought her bike to his front yard Sunday morning, but what happened from Sunday night to Monday evening remains a mystery.

A woman, who did not want to be identified, said Bass was her friend and she was a fighter. She's hoping that will help police.

"(She weighed) about 95 pounds, but a fighter. DNA left behind I'm praying," the woman said.

She said Bass would come to her house when she got hungry and hang out for a while.

"She come to my house and eat, yes. She was my friend and I'm going to truly miss her," the woman said.

The Medical Examiner says the case is being treated as a "foul play incident."

Anyone with information in this case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.
