Police: Elderly housekeeping couple stole from recently deceased

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Sandy Springs police say an elderly couple is accused of stealing thousands of dollars' worth of items from the apartment of a recently deceased resident at a senior living center.

Lamar Albert Melson, 81, and Eleanor Drake Melson, 76, used shopping carts to remove the stolen items from the Mt. Vernon Towers on Johnson Ferry Road in April, according to police.

The couple allegedly committed the first of four burglaries at the apartment on the day after the victim died. Police say the elderly duo were housekeepers at the apartment complex and had access to the victim's apartment.

Family members of the victim noticed a number of personal items missing and reported it to police. Among the items taken were two vases family members say were valued at $3,000.

The Melsons were charged with four counts of burglary and booked into the Fulton County Jail.
