Man dies during SWAT standoff after shooting gun at wife and children, officers, deputies say

PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. — Deputies say a man killed himself during a SWAT standoff after he shot a gun at his wife and children.

The Paulding County Sheriff’s Office said they were called out to a domestic dispute off of Buchanan Highway around 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

The woman said she and her husband got into a fight and she and her three children left he home. She said her husband fired several shots at them as they ran up their driveway.

The woman flagged down help from a driver who took them to a nearby store where she called 911.

When deputies and a Georgia State Patrol trooper went to the home, the suspect, identified as Thomas Brian Buchanan, 41, came out of the home and fired a round at officers.

Officers fired back at Buchanan, who barricaded himself inside the house.

A SWAT team arrived and surrounded the home. After attempting to negotiate with Buchanan and getting no response, the SWAT team searched the home and found Buchanan dead inside.

The coroner said Buchanan died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
