One child dead after sick call

JONESBORO, Ga. — Police are working to determine what killed a Jonesboro toddler and sickened three other young children.

Emergency crews were called out the Marquis Grande Apartments on Tara Boulevard Wednesday afternoon after receiving a call that a child was not breathing. The 2-year-old was rushed to Southern Regional Hospital, but he did not survive. Three other children under 6 were also hospitalized.

Neighbor Larry Williams said the boy's stepfather, who didn't have a cellphone, ran to the leasing office to get help before emergency crews arrived.

"He was very desperate. It was unbelievable," Williams told Channel 2's Amy Napier Viteri.

Williams said he did chest compressions on the toddler until emergency crews arrived.

A woman who said she is the cousin of the 2-year-old who died also spoke with Viteri.

"From what I heard, something happened at the house and when he came from the back room the baby was unresponsive," the woman said.

Williams said an employee at the leasing office flagged him down, and he started chest compressions on the boy. Later, he went to the hospital and learned the boy had died.

"I did all I could do," he said.

Hazmat crews responded to the apartment, but didn't find anything.

Late Wednesday night, family members said only one of the children remains hospitalized. The other two have been sent home.
