ATHENS, Ga. — The Athens-Clarke County Police Department said Friday there is no evidence to support that a rape occurred to a Georgia student in the downtown area following a thorough investigation.
The student said she was out with friends Aug. 20 when she lost consciousness.
She woke up in the dark on cardboard boxes at the top of the city hall stairs. She told officers an unknown man was behind her within arm’s reach, and she walked away disoriented with her skirt inside out.

During the investigation, detectives identified fraudulent financial transaction card activity involving the victim.
This investigation resulted in financial transaction card-related charges against Timothy Evans.
Police identified and arrested a second suspect in connection with financial transaction card fraud.
Dennie Smith, a 40-year-old male of Athens, has been charged with Financial Transaction Card Theft and Financial Transaction Card Fraud.
