Newton County firefighter close to getting $30,000 settlement over unpaid wages

NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — A Newton County firefighter and lieutenant appear close to settling with the county over allegations of unpaid wages and violations of the Fair Labor and Standards Act.

Lt. Michael Wilson sued Newton County over more than $8,500 of allegedly unpaid wages and overtime, according to records in federal court.

According to those records, Wilson and the county have a settlement proposal waiting for a judge’s approval.

The proposed settlement would pay about $30,000 to Wilson, to be split between the wages he says are owed, cover legal costs and pay his attorneys.

The settlement said the funds, if approved by a judge, would be split as:

  • $8,545.92 for alleged unpaid contractually owed wages and overtime wages
  • $865.33 for alleged FLSA liquidated damages owed;
  • $588.75 in litigation costs (solely representing the court filing fee and service or process)
  • $20,000 in attorneys’ fees

Channel 2 Action News reached out to Newton County officials for comment and was told they do not comment on ongoing litigation.
