New flex lanes open Monday on Georgia 400

NORTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Big changes will take effect for your morning and afternoon commute on Monday as Georgia Department of Transportation opens new flex lanes along Georgia 400.

Starting on Monday drivers can utilize additional miles of flex shoulder lanes. The northbound flex lanes start at Abernathy Road to the MARTA North Springs Station; then, MARTA North Springs Station to Northridge Road; and Old Milton Parkway to Windward Parkway.

"On Georgia 400 Southbound we’ll add one more mile of flex shoulder lanes and that will start at the MARTA North Springs station and end at Abernathy Road,” said Annalysce Baker with GDOT.

We first reported on flex shoulder lanes in 2012. GDOT began allowing drivers to use the southbound shoulder during the morning rush. Then they expanded to northbound lanes for the afternoon rush.

GDOT says now adding more miles is a low cost and quick turnaround strategy.

Drivers told us they plan to take full advantage of the plan.

"Anything will be helpful,” said driver Susan Kea.
