Mother wants rental property owners to fix burst pipe mess

ELLENWOOD, Ga. — A Clayton County mother told Channel 2 Action News she is forced to live in a flood-damaged home with her three small children.

Megan Arceneaux says a week after the first round of winter weather she is still dealing with the damage the broken pipes caused.

Arceneaux told Channel 2's Amy Napier Viteri that she arrived home last Thursday to find water flooding out of her front door and garage from two burst pipes in the ceiling.

The water damaged her family's furniture and clothing and at this point she says the management company hasn't said when they will repair any of the damage inside.

Arceneaux walked Viteri through the damage in her Ellenwood rental home, where these holes in the ceiling have been for a week.

"(It's) very frustrating because at times at night when they sleep I cry because I've never been in a situation like this before," Arceneaux said.

She said she found nearly 2 feet of water inside her home last Thursday.

Arceneaux said a burst pipe flooded her children's bathroom. Then she discovered another had burst in the master bedroom right over her brand new bed.

Arceneaux said this week a maintenance person from Meridian Management Group which handles the property came out to change the pipes.

She says the maintenance worker told her there are now signs of mold in the ceiling.  But there's no word if or when someone will fix the damage.

"It's not enough at all. I have three kids that live here with me and this is how we're living,"

Viteri reached out to Clayton County code enforcement who told me they have an active case pending -- and after speaking with the management company they agreed to make the necessary repairs.

Arceneaux's family is sleeping in the living room for now. She says she wants out of the lease to find a new place for her and her children.

"My security deposit, the money that I paid in advance, and I would like them to pay for some of the damage that occurred in this house because I didn't cause the damage," Arceneaux said.

Viteri placed several calls to Meridian Management Group this week but at this time they haven't responded.
