MARTA bus driver charged in pedestrian's death

ATLANTA — A MARTA bus driver has been charged in the death of pedestrian who was hit while walking in a crosswalk.

Police said 19-year-old Brenda Travis was struck by a MARTA bus while she was crossing Ralph D. Abernathy Boulevard at Lee Street on Sept. 24. She later died from her injuries.

Investigators said 54-year-old Leroy Brown was driving the MARTA bus and sounded his horn, but Travis was looking down at her cellphone and had earbuds in at the time.

According to a police report, Brown was traveling at a speed that he should have been able to slow down to keep from striking Travis.

Brown is charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and vehicular homicide.
