Man sold hundreds of stolen cars on Craigslist

ATLANTA,None — Investigators are still trying to pin down the number of stolen cars that a man may have sold to hundreds of people on Craigslist.

Atlanta police investigators believe for the past two years, Marcus Haliburton stole cars, and then created ads to sell them on Craigslist using matching pictures he pulled from legitimate car dealer websites.

Police said during that period, Haliburton posted 198 pages of information on Craigslist to sell those stolen cars.

"(He) always says he's in a hurry. He says there is a salvage title; you can do Carfax and VIN check," Atlanta police Lt. Rick Mason told Channel 2's Ryan Young. "He offers the car for $9,000. When he delivers, he may ask for $4,000 and says he will bring you the title tomorrowe, and keeps the money, leaving you with a stolen car."

Police said Haliburton, the man allegedly responsible for the crime, is now in Fulton County jail on theft charges. Police are asking those who have purchased a car from him to come forward, without fear of facing charges.

"If you call us, and the car is stolen, you will not be charged. We just want you to come to us," explained Mason, who leads the Atlanta Regional Auto Task Force, which scours the city daily for stolen cars.

"If anyone bought a car from Marcus, please contact the Regional Task Force to at least let us inspect your car to find out if it's stolen, and (that) the VIN (vehicle identification number) hasn't been flipped."
