Man killed in drive-by police believe to be gang-related

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — UPDATE: Angel Cruz has died.

-------------------

Investigators believe a drive-by shooting that critically injured a teenager in Gwinnett County was a gang hit.

Channel 2′s Tony Thomas was in Lawrenceville, where the teen who was shot is part of a family who has made it on the news before.

Video from 2018 shows the Cruz family fighting with officers in front of their church on Lawrenceville Highway in 2018.

In the fight, Wilmer Cruz and his older son slammed an officer against a window. Ms. Cruz took an officer's Taser. Cruz was deported and his mother is in prison for the fight.

The couple's three children remained in the home, where they were being cared for by Wilmer Jr., the oldest brother.

On Wednesday, younger brother 18-year-old Angel Cruz was shot and critically injured during a drive-by shooting.

Gwinnett County Police believe a gang banger shot at the house from a passing car. Police believe Cruz was the target. He was shot in the head while sitting in the dining room, police said.

Wilmer Jr. told Thomas that his brother is on a machine and not doing well.

It's not the first time the house has been shot up in recent weeks, and neighbors are on edge.

Thomas talked to the Cruz's neighbor, Luis Galeana, Wednesday after the house was shot up.

"I hope he makes it," Galeana said. "I just feel kind of afraid for my family."

Police have brought in gang investigators to help with the case.

Neighbors say they are praying the violence will stop.

“This used to be a very peaceful neighborhood,” Galeana said.
