HALL COUNTY, Ga. — The Hall County Sheriff’s Office charged a man with multiple counts of family violence, false imprisonment and robbery after a domestic dispute involving a mother with a young child present.
The sheriff’s office were called to a home on Sardis Road on Saturday afternoon.
When deputies got to the scene, they found Carter Governale, the 26-year-old female victim and a toddler at the home.

Deputies said the toddler was Governale and the victim’s son, and all three had been staying at the Sardis Road home after a move from out of state.
Before deputies got to the scene, Governale and the woman were reportedly arguing, then things turned violent.

Deputies said they determined that Governale had punched the woman in the face multiple times in the bedroom, then choked her until she briefly lost consciousness.
The whole time, the toddler was in the room. Deputies said Governale also pushed the child out of the bed while fighting his mother.
The victim escaped the house and Governale followed her out, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies said Governale took the victim’s phone, then grabbed her by the hair and forced her to the ground, then strangled her again, making her briefly lose consciousness again.
The sheriff’s office said Governale also brandished a knife and threatened her, again all seen by the toddler at the home.
The woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries and Governale was taken to the Hall County Jail on multiple charges.
While in jail, Governale’s behavior led to additional charges after deputies said he repeatedly called the woman from the jail, even after she said she wanted to cease contact with him.
Governale faces the following charges:
- 3 counts of aggravated assault under the Family Violence Act
- False imprisonment
- Robbery and possession of a knife during commission of a crime
- 3rd degree child cruelty
- Simple assault under the Family Violence Act
- Making harassing phone calls
