DUNWOODY — Banks, convenience stores and pharmacies are among the usual targets for robbers, but Dunwoody police are investigating a risky mall department store robbery.
On Saturday, security cameras caught an unmasked man in Macy’s at Perimeter Mall. Police say the man walked into the store, handed a clerk a note, and demanded cash.
Officer Tim Fecht with the Dunwoody Police Department told Channel 2’s John Bachman the note implied he had a weapon on him.
According to Fecht, no gun is visible in the surveillance video. The employee gave the man $999.97 in cash and he walked out. He was seen headed toward the Dunwoody MARTA station, Fecht said.
“I’ve never heard of that before,” MARTA passenger Stekoula Giannakouros said of the robbery with a note. “That is really crazy.”
Another MARTA passenger, Briona Harris, also said she had never heard of something like that.
Fecht said that in addition to the cameras and security officers, getting away means walking a quarter of mile away from the mall property. That's why Fecht said Dunwoody police are worried what the risk-taker might do next.
“Putting himself at risk by doing this-- that really shows the danger which he could possibly possess,” Fecht said.
Less than an hour before the mall incident, a man at the Dunwoody MARTA station said he was robbed. Investigators are looking at surveillance footage to see if they could be the same suspect.
"The suspect he described is very similar to the suspect that committed armed robbery at our Macy's," Fecht said.
Police say the man in that video is between 20 and 25 years old. He has a tattoo on his neck, and what they describe as a thin, chinstrap beard. Anyone with information about the suspect or the incident is asked to call the Dunwoody Police Department at 678-382-6914.
