DECATUR, Ga. — Decatur First Christian Church has taken a unique approach to honor those lost in the pandemic: white flags placed throughout the church’s front lawn.
The display has evoked emotions in many that have seen the display.
Sherry Wallace lives in the neighborhood and was moved when she saw the tribute.
The lawn of the church is dotted with more than 15,000 tiny white flags. The flags each represent a life lost to COVID-19.
“Well, it did. You’d have to be callous for it ‘not’ to affect you,” Wallace said.

“We’ve all lost somebody. This is very personal,” pastor James Brewer-Calvert said.
The pastor and volunteers from more than 10 local churches worked on installing the thousands of flags. Each flag stands as a reminder of someone who did not survive COVID-19.
“We’ve all had a traumatic experience. Collectively. This is a way to come together as a community, as a city, as a state---to recognize those who have died,” Brewer-Calvert said.
Sadly, with each new death the church has to update the continually growing memorial. The number of flags in the ground continues to grow.
“It’s....just a tangible reminder that these are your neighbors,” Wallace said.
