“It sounded like it was between 40 and 50 gunshots, because it sounded like three different guns I heard,” said neighbor Angel Everette.
Everette, who lives in the Stonecrest Mill Apartments with her husband, says they were terrified that a stray bullet would strike their home, or one of them.
“Honestly, I was trying to duck, because it sounded so close to my bathroom, I honestly thought the shots were going to go through my window,” said Everette.
When she and other neighbors went outside, they spotted a dead man on the ground near some bushes.
Crime scene investigators arrived and began searching for evidence. They placed dozens of evidence markers on the pavement outside an apartment building where the shooting took place.
“When I heard all the gunfire, I thought it was a gang war going on.” said neighbor Adam Zito.
Zito is an U.S. Army Veteran who fought in Afghanistan.
“I can just tell you looking at all the shell casing, one was a rifle, and the others a couple of pistols involved,” said Zito.
He told Channel 2’s Tom Regan, hear the multiple gunshots is traumatizing.
“Yeah, it brings back some bad memories,” said Zito.
The veteran says the shooting has made think about moving out.
“I don’t feel safe here. I’m just a veteran trying to re-establish my life. Going back to college and stuff like that. And now this is happening,” said Zito.
Everette says she just graduated from Georgia State University with a degree in criminal justice.
“And just to see this up front, is so surreal for me to experience this, knowing of what I just learned.” said Everette.
DeKalb Police have not released the name of the shooting victim, and they say there have been no arrests.
