Hurricane Isaias: Gov. Brian Kemp issues State of Emergency

ATLANTA — Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp issued a State of Emergency ahead of Hurricane Isaias.

The hurricane is on track to make landfall along the Gulf coast Friday night. Its remnants will have an impact across metro Atlanta on Saturday and Sunday.

“As we always do with weather events, we’re hoping for the best but preparing for the worst just in case. I want to make sure nobody is overly alarmed out there and not be panicked, but also we want Georgians to take this storm seriously and to be prepared,”

There is a tropical storm watch in effect for dozens of counties. Kemp says the State of Emergency order is for the whole state out of an abundance of caution.

For Georgia impacts, Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Brad Nitz says a track to our west means very heavy rain bands, possible flooding and the risk of brief tornadoes on Saturday.

A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for several counties. This means sustained tropical storm force winds 39+ mph are possible within 48 hours. Gusts will be higher.

“We just want to urge all Georgians to be prepared now by stocking up on water, food, batteries, flashlights, and other necessities just in case this weather worsens from what we think it does. And as the storm approaches, certainly be vigilant of tornadoes,” Kemp said.
