Homeland Security: Visas revoked for missing Afghan airmen

ATLANTA — The Department of Homeland Security is speaking out about two Afghan airmen who disappeared from Moody Air Force base nearly two weeks ago.

Mirwais Kohistani and Shirzad Rohullah were just days away from wrapping up a year of training to fly and maintain a fighter plane.

"You've got a variety of electronic information, physical information that when people travel, they leave clues," said Bryan Cox of the Department of Homeland Security.

The U.S. State Department on Friday revoked the missing men's visas, giving DHS and agents at the Atlanta field office the green light to take over the search from the Air Force.

"We're actively following all the leads that we have, and we're confident that it's only a matter of time until we locate these individuals," Cox said. "There's no specific information that I have leading me to believe that these individuals are of any particular threat."

Cox would not comment on security camera footage that sources say investigators pulled from Valdosta's airport or reports that the two men reserved a rental car there.

"Their faces are out there, their names have been out there, and that information is in a variety of databases, so that if there's any kind of local law enforcement contact, or some financial contact that might occur, (the) short answer would be, we're going to know about that," Cox said.

DHS said that at this point, authorities have no reason to believe that foul play was involved in the missing airmen's disappearance.
