Police say a former Henry County Firefighter shot and killed his wife and her 6-year-old son, before killing himself.

Investigators identified the man as 37-year-old James Bryant.

They say he murdered his wife, Melissa, and her 6-year-old son Conner Patrick.

Conner was in first grade.  He attended Bethlehem Elementary.

"He was just as cute as a button, just as cute as he could be, really truly, truly a neat kid," said Principal Jessalyn Askew, "It's a family member, we lost a family member."

She told Channel 2 investigative reporter Erica Byfield that she'll never forget how excited Conner got when he saw her in the hallway.

They both often wore cowboy boots. "He was like, 'I have my cowboy boots on' and we would talk about that and you could hear him walking down the halls clicking his heels," Askew said.

On Tuesday, we found no signs of the crime scene that engulfed the home on Bill Gardner Parkway a day earlier.

Henry County Police spokesman Capt. Joey Smith told Byfield investigators believe this is a domestic issue, "They all died related to gunshot wounds," he added.

Smith said the Bryants married a year ago.

The 911 call Byfield obtained shows Melissa' Bryant's boss called for help.

"One of my employees is having issues with her husband and she's never no-showed," the caller told the dispatcher.

Police say Bryant did not leave a suicide note. Smith told Byfield investigators are focused on processing the evidence they collected.

Byfield looked into Bryant's past and found he's a former county firefighter who was currently the head of a home improvement company. State records show he formed Big Pine Home Improvement in 2015.  Other records Byfield sorted through suggest the former firefighter had some financial trouble.

Channel 2 Action News filed an open records request for Bryant's Henry County personnel file.
