HENRY COUNTY — A Henry County woman says her dog was attacked by two copperhead snakes.
Henry County Animal Control Officer Cindi Niblett loves her boxer Ivan and told Channel 2 Action News that she thought she was going to lose him Thursday after two copperheads attacked him.
“I saw him (lying) here with his head propped up against the door,” Niblett said.
Niblett said Ivan didn't look good and could barely stand up.
The snake was a good 2 1/2-feet long.
“We found 6-7 inches of the second one,” Niblett said.
“Those bites can be really bad because you get a lot of swelling and edema associated with the bite,” Andrew McKnight, the owner of Fairview Animal Hospital said.
McKnight says this time
a
of year they will see at least one dog with a copperhead bite every few weeks.
He says dog owners need to be proactive and take away snake hiding spots in their yards.
“Things like compost piles, leaf piles, brush piles, log piles,” McKnight said.
Her vet bill was more than $1,200.
Her vet told Channel 2’s Craig Lucie dog owners also need to keep their pets on a leash and away from tall grass while they are out walking them.
They have seen many bite victims that way too.
