GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Two people were killed in a crash on Interstate 85 northbound Thursday afternoon.

The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. near Pleasant Hill Road. I-85 was shut down for hours as police investigated, but has since reopened.

Officers say a white car and a tractor trailer hauling tens of thousands of pounds of steel hit were traveling northbound when the white car lost control and swerved into the path of the tractor trailer.

Authorities are still trying to identify the passengers who died.

Two people in the white car died and three others were injured. The driver of the tractor trailer was also taken to the hospital.

Investigators still do not know why the driver of the white vehicle swerved out of his lane.

Crews will be inspecting the car to check for any defects.  Speed and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors.
