Powerful afternoon storms wreak havoc across metro Atlanta

NORCROSS, Ga. — Friday night, powerful storms caused massive damage across parts of metro Atlanta.

“Like a really quick storm came flying through. I mean whipping, whipping, and then hail and everything, and it was crazy,” said Nona Johnson with The Local Peach. “And then the storm was over.”

Johnson said everything happened in less than 10 minutes. Trees fell down all over downtown Norcross.

“And then the power went out,” Johnson said.

Johnson is a chef at The Local Peach, an area restaurant and grocery store.

But without power, all of their produce and food will be ruined. They were forced to save as much of it as possible.

“Food in the fridge doesn’t stay that long, so we’re trying,” Johnson said.

She told Channel 2′s Larry Spruill that the frustration was just too much for her.

“If we lose everything in our fridge and our freezers, we have to start all over again,” Johnson said.

Spruill watched as crews started to cut down the trees in Norcross.

People across metro Atlanta witnessed Mother Nature’s wrath.

Viewers sent us video of hail falling on a deck in Roswell.

Channel 2′s Gwinnett County Bureau Chief Tony Thomas recorded video of heavy downpours in Gwinnett County.

Walton County got hit hard with the storms as well. Crews quickly started to clean up the debris.

Meanwhile, in Norcross, people are preparing to embrace a night without air conditioning or power.

“The whole town is out right now. They said, like, over 2,000 people without power,” Johnson said.
