GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — The Gwinnett County Police Department said one of its officers shot a man in the chest Friday morning.

According to investigators, Gwinnett County officers spotted a man known to have warrants in a car near Hamilton Mill Road near Buford.

Channel 2's Tony Thomas learned officers then tried to pull him over, but he took off and pulled a handgun out and started firing at the officers, according to police.

The chase then ended about nine miles later in Hall County near Friendship Road and Highway 211, when officers were able to spin the suspect's vehicle out and pin him, police say. At that point, authorities said the suspect got out of his car with a gun and then an officer opened fire.

“They did clearly see that the suspect pulled out his own firearm, and the officers had to make a very quick decision and they took out their own firearm, and that's when one of our officers fired toward the suspect,” Gwinnett County Cpl. Michele Pihera said.

Police said the suspect was wounded in the jaw and hand. No officers were injured.

Polo Loredo says he heard a barrage of sirens and then the gunshot just down the street from his construction job.

“I was just thinking there was kids involved, but thank God there wasn't any kids in there,” Loredo said.

Police so far haven’t identified the man, except to say he is in his 30s. He is expected to survive and will face several charges, according to police.
