GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A Gwinnett County mother has died after a garbage truck hit her early Wednesday morning.

Police say Lidiea Rivereas-Martinez was walking along Burns Road around 7:30 a.m. when she stepped behind a garbage truck backing out of a driveway.

Family members told Channel 2’s Nicole Carr that Rivereas-Martinez had just walked her child to Hopkins Elementary School, less than a mile away and was on her way back home when it happened. She was just feet away from her own home.

Her family was too upset to talk about the ordeal, but police say there was no indication that either she or the dump truck driver were distracted.

The Georgia Motor Carrier Compliance Division responded to the scene. They reported that the truck's safety equipment was functioning properly.

Rivereas-Martinez was rushed to the hospital, where she later died.

Police say there will be no charges filed in the incident.
