Gwinnett County to keep providing free meals to students through summer

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett County and Gwinnett County Public Schools are teaming up to continue to feed students all summer long.

On May 15, meal service for the standard school year will end after the district provided more than 2.2 million meals at 67 school locations and on bus delivery routes.

On May 18, the county will take over from the school district by starting its Summer Meals program.

The program will offer free grab-and-go breakfasts and lunches for children 18 years old and younger. Parents can pick up the meals at 18 park locations around the county and children can also pick up their own meals.

The summer meals program is in its second year, but will be expanded this year to account for people facing hardships due to the coronavirus pandemic. Last year, meals were handed out at seven locations.

“It is the common goal of the Board of the Commissioners and the Board of Education to assist families and make sure children receive nutritious meals during this challenging time,” said Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners Chairman Charlotte Nash. “For some kids, this may be the only meal they get that day."

The summer meals program complements another summer meal program run by Gwinnett County Public Schools that runs from June 8 - 26. Details about that program will be announced later.

Registration is not required. Meals can be picked up between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. while supplies last at:
