Fire breaks out at Buford power transfer station, knocking out electricity for some

BUFORD, Ga. — Firefighters responded to a fire that broke out at a power transfer station in Buford Friday afternoon.

A Channel 2 Action News viewer sent video of thick black smoke from the site on Riverside Road off of Highway 20 around 3:45 p.m.

Officials said the site is an Sawnee EMC power regulator/transfer station.

Crews found what appeared to be four or five large power regulator boxes that were burning in a gravel area.

The location was behind a Publix. Fire officials said there were no exposure hazards and no injuries were reported.

Fire crews got the blaze under control but were waiting for Sawnee Power officials to shut the station down so they can fully extinguish the fire.

About 2,000 Sawnee Power customers in Gwinnett County were without power after the incident.
