DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A DeKalb County sheriff’s deputy says he scrambled for cover when someone started firing gunshots into his house late Tuesday night.

Police are trying to figure out why someone opened fire on the home, firing at least seven shots. We are not sharing the name of the street or neighborhood for the deputy’s safety.

“We heard something; boom, boom, boom, boom, boom,” said neighbor Shirley Jackson.

Neighbors say the gunfire was loud and sounded extremely close. "Sound like an AK,” said a neighbor who identified himself only as Robert.

Five bullets hit the deputy's garage, one hit his marked SUV and another hit a window of the home right where the deputy was sitting.

“So evidently whoever did it they knew exactly where he sits to shoot.” Jackson said.

The police report says the deputy was watching TV when he heard the shots. He ordered his wife upstairs. That's when the deputy grabbed his service weapon and went outside and saw the bullet holes.

“I was like what would make somebody do something like that to anyone,” Jackson said.

A neighbor reported seeing someone running through her backyard after the shots. Police are investigating.

Some neighbors felt a sense of safety with a law enforcement officer living in their community. They’re not so sure after this shooting.

"If you shoot at a Sheriff or law enforcement you could care less about me," Jackson said.
