A group is fighting to save a historic downtown Atlanta building from becoming a parking lot.

The Bell Building has been on Auburn Avenue for 108 years.

It was once the hub for city telephone communication.

The university plans to demolish it for a parking lot.

Georgia State University now owns it.

Some residents would rather see it renovated.

"We’re trying to build a better downtown that's more vibrant and has a lot more activity in it. Why build a block of nothing but parking lots and blank walls?" Darin Givens said.

The university says renovating the building could cost $22 million.
