DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The girlfriend of Army Reservist Xavier Arnold offered testimony Wednesday in the trial of the two people accused of killing him.
Prosecutors said Zion Wainwright was 14 and Qutravius Palmer was 20 when they attempted to rob Arnold, his girlfriend, Xenia Aims, and friend Ibrahim Sanusi on a bike trail in Kirkwood in 2013.
Channel 2’s Tom Jones was there for the testimony by Arnold's mother, Nichole Villafane, who works for the district attorney's office.
The DeKalb District Attorney’s Office is not handling this case because she is employed there.
Villafane had to identify Arnold's belongings found at the scene where he was killed.
“These are the Ray Ban shades my father gave my son,” Villafane said.
Before testimony ended Wednesday, she took the stand and described her last moments with her son.
“He came over and kissed me on my cheek, and he told me ‘I love you’ and that was the last thing I heard from my son,” she said.
Aims testified Wednesday that Arnold fought back when the pair tried to rob them.
“It was just chaotic. It was chaos. There was yelling. There was noise,” Aims said.
Aims said Wainwright shot Sanusi in the leg and then pointed the gun at Arnold.
She said that's when she says she stepped into the line of fire.
Aims said Wainwright shot Arnold in the head and took off, with Palmer right behind him.
Wainright said he was just doing what Palmer told him to do.
Palmer said he had nothing to do with the crime.
Aims said Sanusi told her Palmer did egg Wainwright on that day.
“He said I remember him yelling ‘Shoot him, shoot him,’” Aims said.
