ATHENS, Ga. — The University of Georgia said it supports a request by suspended running back Todd Gurley to seek reinstatement by the NCAA following an indefinite suspension.
"Todd has confirmed his desire to seek reinstatement, and the University fully supports Todd's request. The University plans to file the necessary paperwork with the NCAA later today," a school statement said.
Gurley is accused of signing pieces of memorabilia for money, a violation of the NCAA benefit rules for amateur athletes.
He has been suspended since Oct. 9. The Bulldogs have not lost a game despite the absence of Gurley, a potential Heisman Award candidate.
“I want to thank the University, coaches, teammates, and the Bulldog Nation for their patience and support,” Gurley said in a statement released Wednesday. “I take full responsibility for the mistakes I made, and I can’t thank the University, my coaches, and teammates enough for supporting me throughout this process. I’m looking forward to getting back on the field with my teammates.”
A University spokesman said the school hopes for a prompt ruling by the NCAA. Georgia's next opponent is Florida on Nov. 1.
