Some Georgia beaches ordered closed to swimmers this weekend due to Hurricane Isaias

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. — The mayor of Tybee Island has begun making orders for the island as Hurricane Isaias churns in the Caribbean.

As a precautionary measure, Mayor Shirley Sessions has ordered to close beaches to swimmers on the island on Sunday and Monday.

The hurricane is expected to skirt the Florida and Georgia coasts Sunday and Monday.

Sessions said the storm could create dangerous surf and cause beach erosion. The mayor says there is no evacuation orders planned as of yet, but officials will continue to monitor the storm.

City administrative offices will be closed Monday, but all public safety and 911 services will remain active.

As of 11 a.m. Friday, the storm as maximum sustained winds of 75 mph and is moving toward the northwest.

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for the east coast of Florida, from Ocean Reef to Sebastian Inlet and Lake Okeechobee.

Some strengthening is possible today, and Isaias is expected to remain a hurricane for the next few days.
