The GBI said the incident happened around 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, in the 100 block of Oakmont Court.

An Athens-Clarke County police officer was attempting to stop a black SUV driven by Derrell Dukes, 33, of Athens. The stop was related to multiple outstanding arrest warrants for Dukes in Athens-Clarke County.

A Winterville police officer arrived to assist. According to the GBI, Dukes opened the driver’s door after being ordered to get out, but then closed it and drove away. One of the officers fired one shot toward the SUV as it left.

A pursuit followed, and the SUV crashed in the 3000 block of Spratlin Mill Road in Hull, in Madison County.
