ATLANTA — Thousands of people flocked to downtown Atlanta Friday night to see the annual Georgia Salutes America" Fourth of July show and fireworks display.

The evening included performances from American Idol Taylor Hicks and had a mix of musical entertainment, a special tribute to the men and women who serve in our armed forces and the most spectacular fireworks show in the South

Channel 2’s Jovita Moore and Sports Anchor Zach Klein hosted the special event.

"Georgia Salutes America" delivered special 4th of July greetings from Georgians serving away from home and showcased the winner of the Montlick & Associates' "Most Deserving Military Family" contest.

The evening ended with Centennial Olympic Park’s Fireworks Spectacular, Atlanta’s best fireworks display synchronized to a special selection of patriotic and popular music.

People waited for hours Friday to get into the park so they could get a front-row seat to the event.

With thousands attending, police were out in force to make sure it was a fun and safe event.

Maj. Billy Gordon said in addition to his officers, Atlanta police are working along with Georgia State Troopers, Fulton County deputies and even private security.

They're even monitoring social media for potential threats.

Lu Anne Rhyne from North Carolina said she came to Atlanta to watch the fireworks. She said she appreciates the extra security because after the Boston Marathon bombings, you can never be too careful.

"It makes you really realize large crowds, big holiday where somebody wanted to do some damage, there's plenty of opportunities, so I'm glad for the security," Rhyne said.

Nidhi Purohit and her family are visiting from New Orleans. She said he appreciates the security too.

"So it's everywhere it looks like, which as a mom makes you feel secure and comfortable," Purohit said.
