Traffic stop turns into chase in Sandy Springs

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — A traffic stop ended with a chase and the arrest of a driver, according to police.

A Sandy Springs police officer conducted a traffic stop involving a white Mazda on Roswell Road near Sandy Springs Circle on Saturday.

Police identified the driver as Peter Wetche. According to authorities, Wetche initially stopped near Johnson Ferry Road and Sandy Springs Circle.

As the officer approached the vehicle, police said Wetche sped away, leading officers on a chase.

During the chase, the pursuing officer performed a PIT maneuver, bringing the chase to an end. Police said Wetche was taken into custody.

Wetche is charged with fleeing and eluding and failure to obey a traffic control device.

“The Sandy Springs Police Department will not tolerate individuals who flee from law enforcement or disregard the law,” the department said in a statement. “Our officers will continue to take appropriate action to protect the safety of our community.”
