FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Interstate 285 will shut down in southwest Atlanta this weekend, and it will continue to happen over the next few years.

Channel 2’s Steve Gehlbach was along the interstate in southwest Atlanta that’s part of the westside rebuild.
All lanes of the interstate are closing at 7 p.m. Friday between Langford Parkway and Cascade Road. The closure of all lanes both north and southbound for two miles will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.
And it’s never good for drivers, or businesses in these corridors, but it something everyone has to get used to.
It’s all part of Georgia Department of Transportation’s massive project to rebuild the entire west wall of I-285 from south Fulton up to Cobb County, replacing the concrete down to the substructure.

The closure will detour traffic to other metro interstates like Interstate 20 and the downtown connector.
“Usually when they do the shutdown, I do see a lot of build up of traffic down Cascade as people try to get off 20, or 285 and head to 20 to go around it,” Cal Muhammad said.
And he has this advice for other drivers this weekend: “Get your stuff done. It’s good to get out early and would think to just plan ahead.”
These full closures that started back in May could happen up to 40 times over the next three years as part of the I-285 rebuild.
