FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A Forsyth County woman told Channel 2’s Audrey Washington her quick thinking helped her survive a home invasion.

“I said this is an emergency. There’s a man in my house and you need to come now,” Jane Roberts said to a 911 dispatcher.

“He was in the kitchen,” Roberts explained Friday.

Roberts said at around 2 a.m. on Dec. 20 she found 47-year-old Payton Wesley Roper standing inside her home.

“I just told him to get out of my house. Get out of my house now,” Roberts said.

Roberts said when Roper did not respond she calmly walked away.

“And that was my cue to just go back down the hall and go in the bathroom and close the bathroom door and call 911,” said Roberts.

According to the incident report Washington obtained, when Forsyth County deputies arrived, they found Roper kicking the front door. The report also stated that Roper was “heavily intoxicated.”

At one point, according to deputies, Roper claimed he was a detective.

Deputies said they found several doors damaged from the suspect trying to break in.

Deputies believe Roper got inside through the basement door.

The 47-year-old is now charged with home invasion in the second degree.

“I would say the most important thing to do in a situation like this is to stay calm. Trust in the lord,” Roberts said.

Roberts said her home has a security system, but she believes Roper knocked it offline during the incident.

She said she is working to make her home more secure.

“Yeah, were going to be a little more secure than we were before,” Roberts said.
