GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A former Lilburn police officer accused of improper handling of drug evidence has reached a plea deal with prosecutors.
Kim Banks received three years' probation and first offender status.
An officer assigned to the Evidence Unit discovered irregularities in prescription drug evidence in February 2014. During the investigation, authorities learned that an evidence bag containing prescription drugs disappeared. Banks later resigned.
In July, Banks was arrested and charged with theft by taking, possession of a controlled substance and violating oath of office.
Banks denied taking pills in an interview with Channel 2's Tony Thomas.
"I never stole any pills. I never took any pills," Banks said. "I have made some mistakes in the handling of evidence. I will fully admit to that."
Banks will not serve any jail time.
