TROUP COUNTY, Ga. — A former Troup County detention officer has been charged with stealing money from inmates’ accounts, the Troup County Sheriff’s Office said.
Douglas Robert Meserole was charged with two counts of felony theft by taking by a fiduciary when it was discovered he had taken $2,800 from inmates’ accounts, officials said.

The theft was discovered during a routine audit after Meserole left his position in November 2021.
Officials said Meserole worked as the store call officer and was in charge of inmate funds and commissary. During the audit, two former inmates said their federal stimulus checks had been deposited by the Troup County Sheriff’s Office.

“Every person that works for the Troup County Sheriff’s Office are held to a high standard and I tell them personally that should they violate law, they will be arrested and charged accordingly. I appreciate the hard work by my investigators and the cooperation with the DA’s office,” Sheriff James Woodruff said in a news release.
