Flowers, balloons left for Marietta teens killed in crash

MARIETTA, Ga. — Family and friends have created a memorial at the scene of a crash that killed two Marietta teens.

Driver Stephen Nolasco and his passenger, Matthew Bennett, were killed when their Volvo S60 crossed into the southbound lanes of Sandy Plains Road and struck a brick column around 3 a.m. Sunday.

Police said Nolasco, 19, may have been speeding when he lost control of the vehicle, which came to a stop in a tree at the intersection of Kinjac Drive and caught fire.

A growing pile of balloons, flowers and stuffed animals has been left at the crash scene.

Friends said the pair was best friends who graduated from Sprayberry High School last year and attended Georgia Perimeter College together.

"It's just really hard to think about two really close people to me that caught on fire. I just can't look at that tree and think, those were two close people to me. There's debris everywhere and bricks," said Taylor Hill, holding back tears.

Friends said Bennett, 18, was a standout soccer player and Nolasco was a Hollister clothing model.

Cobb County police investigators are still working to determine what led up to the crash.

A vigil will be held at the crash scene on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
