UPDATE: Florida ROTC student found safe in Alabama after vanishing from field trip

UPSON COUNTY, Ga. — A Florida high school student has been found safe in Alabama after deputies say she disappeared in middle Georgia during a school field trip.

Mia Brailford, 16, was attending a ROTC field trip to the Gerald Lawhorn Scouting Base in Molena, Georgia, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said she was found safe around 4 p.m. at a home in Phenix City, Alabama. A man was detained at the location and is expected to be charged with interstate interference with child custody, which is a felony.

Her roommate said she last saw Brailford Saturday night at 11:30 p.m. in a tent they were sharing. She never showed up to the morning check-in at 6 a.m. Sunday.

Investigators did not name the suspect.

Brailford was found using historic cell phone data. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the FBI assisted in the search.

Brailford attends Atlantic Community High School in Delray Beach.
