COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Cobb County police announced the arrest of a suspect in the murder of a local woman 23 years ago.
According to police, they charged George Gengarelly, of Hernando, Fla. with the murder of Yvonne Weems, of Atlanta. She was 37 years old.
Police said on Jan. 12, 1991, Weems’ partially clothed body was found in a recreational area off Lake Acworth Drive in Acworth, Ga. At the time, investigators believed she had been sexually assaulted before being shot to death.
Based on DNA evidence, police said detectives with the Cobb County Police Department’s Crimes Against Persons Unit identified a suspect in the cold case.
Gengarelly was charged with murder, aggravated assault, aggravated sodomy, rape and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Gengarelly is being held in the Citrus County Jail in Lecanto, Fla., according to the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office website. He is awaiting extradition to Cobb County, Ga., police said.
