FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. — A fire destroyed a home in Fayette County on Wednesday.
The fire happened on the 300 block of Porter Road.
Neighbor Dana Sapp says two elderly people live in the house.
Fayette County Deputy Fire Chief Tom Bartlett told Channel 2’s Tom Jones that the couple was unaccounted for hours but was located around 1:30 p.m.
Firefighters had not been able to contact the couple for nearly seven hours. The couple had no idea that a fire had destroyed their home until they pulled up Wednesday afternoon.
“They had been away from their home since Monday. Their phone was turned off this morning,” Fayette County Fire Department Capt. Mike Singleton said.
The couple did not want to talk about what happened.
The fire remains under investigation.
Firefighters said there were firecrackers in the home that were set off when the fire started, but they did not pose a problem in putting the fire out.
